Gulf of Mexico Fishing

Gulf of Mexico Fishing

I traveled with Boating Magazine editor Robert Stephens from Orlando to New Orleans. We got off the plane and headed to Venice, Louisiana. Since we drove at night, we didn’t get to see much, but seeing the GPS, we knew the Mississippi River was by our side. And it’s shadow indicated it was at a higher level than the road we were on.

We met up with the Coastal Conservation Association members Tony Berrigan, Sam Elliot and Executive Director David Cresson. Their group tags and releases thousands of fish annually. When they’re caught again by sportsman weeks or even years down the road, the tag has a phone number to call to describe the current condition of the fish including size and weight.

Growing up in Maine, I had never boated on the Gulf of Mexico. When you leave the Mississippi River, and the gulf is flat, there are so many oil rigs and oil equipment, it looks like more land on the horizon. The view blew my mind. Tony, Sam and David were fantastic hosts. We learned a lot of about their conservation efforts and the massive group of members that care about the fisheries.

Keep up the good work gentleman!
