Graeme McDowell for GMac Apparel

Graeme McDowell won the U.S. Open golf championship at Pebble Beach in 2010. The Irishman, who calls Orlando home, has his own line of fantastic apparel.

I first met Mike, the president of GMac Apparel, in 2015 at an Orlando function. He mentioned that they’ll need new photos for future marketing. Well, more than a year passed when I got a random call from Mike saying he remembered me from over a year ago, and to see if I was interested in the gig. I couldn’t believe Mike remembered my name, never mind my phone number.

We organized our make up artist, stylist and assistants. We used Lake Nona Golf Club, Nona Blue and Graeme’s home as locations.  The shoot, done in the summer of 2016, went fabulous.  It was great to hear Graeme be hands on with Mike about the fit and looks of the shirts and pants. Graeme isn’t just a pretty face for the brand, he’s very involved in every detail. I didn’t know what a placket was until I heard them talking about it. Graeme and Mike decided to change the piping color on a shirt during the photoshoot. Sounds like boring stuff for buyers, but real thought, energy, expense and hard work goes into each element.

It was great to visit Graeme’s office, as it had the US Open trophy on a shelf. We shot a few pictures in the office with the trophy in the background. And his garage was full of bags and clubs from tournaments past.

I look forward to more work with Graeme in the future and wish him nothing but success.

Olafia Kristinsdottir, LPGA Tour

I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph the first full time LPGA Tour player from Iceland at Grand Cypress resort in Orlando on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. I made some putting, bunker, reaction and driving photos. We also made some portraits for my client.  Olafia arrived at 3pm, got a little make up on and then met us at the executive three hole course at Grand Cypress.

It’s great to ask a tour pro to drop a few sand shots in front of the camera, and it actually happens. Doing the same for amateurs is downright scary and dangerous. These pro golfers are fantastic to work with, and always the nicest.

It was great to hear from the client the next morning, saying how happy they were with the work.

Olafia has a beautiful swing that I predict will do very well on tour this year.

Check out Olafia’s Instagram account to follow her first year on the LPGA Tour!

Rory McIlroy interview

It’s best to photograph Rory McIlroy in his home country of Ireland. It’s also best to photograph the champion the day after he wins the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, hosted by The Rory Foundation.  It’s also best to bring along fellow Irishman David Feherty to conduct an interview for Golf Channel.

The stars aligned for Feherty and his crew in 2016. We met up with Rory McIlroy at the Carton House Hotel a few miles away from where he secured his first Irish Open victory at The K Club.

Rory came to the interview with his sparkling trophy and a big smile on his face for the sit down interview with Feherty. After the interview, Rory met up with Irish national team soccer players on the driving range for some tips and laughter.

Steve Monroe, World Long Drive,

Steve “The Predator” Monroe

Steve “The Predator” Monroe is my new favorite golfer. Dreads. Gold teeth. Breathes fire. I met Monroe while working at the 2016 World Long Drive competition for Golf Channel the WinStar Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

I didn’t know about the predator mask until someone asked if I photographed him wearing it.  “He wears WHAT?”  Monroe takes the stage wearing a predator mask, please YouTube his entrances. It’s amazing to see in while holding a golf club.

The guy brings passion and excitement to the sport unlike any other competitor. And he delivers.  He hits bombs. And he breathes fire.

Tony Robbins poses on his private jet in West Palm Beach, Florida in 2016.

Tony Robbins Corporate Jet

A phone call from Business Jet Traveler is always welcomed. I know that I’ll be working with a heavyweight in the world of sports or business. This call was no different. Tony Robbins corporate jet is a beautiful thing.

Jennifer English and I met up with Tony Robbins on the tarmac at the West Palm Beach airport in Florida. Tony is a big dude with a huge plane. It’s a Bombardier Global Express XRS to be exact. Tony and his team decided that conducting the interview on his newly remodeled corporate plane would be best. I sat in for the interview, making a few photos of Robbins’ facial expressions, body language and hand gestures.

I left the interview after 15 minutes to set up my profoto strobe gear. Earlier, The team at Atlantic Aviation and I had strategically positioned the aircraft away from the other planes, some belonging to Michael Jordan, Donald Trump and Michael Bloomberg.

I walked back onto the airplane for the final minutes of the interview. It was great to listen as Tony talked about politics, entrepreneurship, growing up poor, charitable giving and much more. He’s usually talking to thousands of people in a crowd, but on that afternoon, I had a front row ticket to listen to one of the worlds greatest speakers… on his multi million dollar plane.

Most business types don’t like to have their photo made, but Tony showed great interest and patience while I worked the camera. The one conversation topic I can keep up with dealing with business moguls is golf. Tony talked about his game and some of the charity tournaments he plays in. I wrapped up the photography and he noticed that I didn’t make a photo showing the entire side of the plane. I said, “Well, let’s shoot one with you in it really quick!”  He was happy to do so, and I was happy with the entire collection of photos.

Tony said his goodbyes to us on the tarmac as a lucky group of young entrepreneurs waited to meet him… maybe I’ll be photographing one of those people one day.

I got a call from Tony’s team after the article and photos ran in Business Jet Traveler magazine. So, if you see a photo of Tony at his private jet at Tony’s next speaking engagement, it might be mine.

Safe travels to Tony and his incredible team.

Here’s a link to Jennifer’s article in the magazine.

Ian Woosnam

Woosie.  WeeMan. Ian Woosnam won the Masters golf tournament in 1991 and has 50+ other victories worldwide. It was an honor to work with him while Golf Channel filmed his special instruction at Championsgate in Orlando, Florida.

Woosnam isn’t a very large man, but I wanted him to look larger than life when I made his portrait. Filming had to be delayed for an hour due to a rain storm, which brought in these fantastic dramatic clouds.

Erin Hills Golf Course, Wisconsin

Erin Hills Golf Course, Wisconsin

I got the opportunity to photograph Erin Hills Golf Club outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2016. When working with Golf Channel, we also get to work with the US Open Championship Trophy. When photographing a golf course, it’s best to work during the sunrise and sunset hours. We photograph the golf course a year in advance of the tournament to avoid the yet-to-be-built tents, grandstands and more. Also, because they start to build the TV graphics and promotional material months in advance.

Tune into the Golf Channel in June to catch the US Open coverage!
